How to install Suunto DM5 software on your MacBook

Suunto quietly released their new DM5 software on the 29th of October. For people who never heard of DM5 software. It's a program which allows you to download your dive logs for advanced analysis and upload detailed dive plans to your dive computer. Off course it only works with Suunto dive computers. Below I will take you along how to install the DM5 software on your MacBook in four steps, after which you'll be able to connect your Suunto dive computer.

t's been a while since I last used the previous DM4 software, that was still in a period I was using a Windows orientated laptop. Afterwards I found it a challenge to get the DM4 software installed on my MacBook and let it go. With the release of the DM5 software it's a good moment to take a better look at the new DM5 program and install it on my MacBook. So where to begin?!

Step 1
The first step is clicking the download link on the website from Suunto:
--> Go to Suunto website and download from there
--> Download directly

After the download you'll see image 'a' on your main screen which you can double click and then will offer you image 'b'.

Image 'b' means that you need to drag the DM5 program icon (image a) to you application folder. You can find the application folder by opening 'Finder'. In the menu (left) you see the application folder. Drag the icon un top of the application folder and let go.

Step 2:
The next step starts, you guessed it, with double clicking the Suunto DM5 program icon in the application folder. This gives you a pop up warning that you have to install 'Mono MRE'. This is a een open source implementation of Microsofts .NET Framework*. Automatically the website opens where you can download this (http://www.mono-project.com/download/ ). Choose the 'Download Mono MRE' button. On your main screen the download package is visible again. Double click it and go through the install wizard. 

!I made the choice to trust this website and download the install program. You need this program to run the DM5 software!

Step 3:
When your done with installing the 'Mono MRE software' it's time for step three. This mean going back to you application folder and click the Suunto DM5 icon again. For a second time you get a pop-up asking to install: FTDIUSBSerialDriver. To be honest I have no idea what it is, but again you need it to run the DM5 software.

Click OK and the install wizard will pop-up again. Run through the install wizard.

Step 4:
You have installed all that is necessary to use the Suunto DM5 software. To open the program click the Suunto DM5 icon for a last time in your application folder. After a short period of configuring the program it will open and the DM5 icon will be shown in your 'Dock'. Click on this item to open the program and you'll see the screen below.

Now your ready to link your Suunto dive computer to the DM5 software. You can do this with the following Suunto dive computers: D4, D6, D9, D4i, D4i Novo, D6i, D9tx, DX, Zoop, Vyper, Vytec, Vytec DS, Cobra, Vyper2, Vyper Air, Cobra2, Cobra3, HelO2, EON Steel.

Once installed, the DM5 software automatically recognises your Suunto dive computer.

I got the following tip in the comments, hope this helps some of you with trouble installing Suunto DM5:

"Anyone struggling on yosemite and Mono version 4. I went back to version 3.12.0 and it's working perfectly. Hope that helps anyone in trouble!"

  1. Does this work with a Stinger Suunto dive watch? I’m not getting the laptop with OS X Yosemite to find the dive computer.

    The DM5 software only supports the following dive computers: Suunto EON Steel, DX, D9tx, D6i, D4i, D9, D6, D4, HelO2, Cobra, Cobra2, Cobra3, Vyper, Vyper2, Vyper Air, Zoop, Vytec and the Vytec DS.

    • Hi Richard,

      If the DM5 software is installed, than the Zoop should be able to connect. Perhaps the problem is with the cable?! I had this myself once, I got a new cable and afterwards everything worked fine.

  3. I wonder if you can help, I’m new to the Mac world and can’t get DM5 to load it just hangs on the configuring Mono Framework icon. I’ve contacted Suunto about this and they have been as much use as a chocolate fireguard :-/

    • Hi Chas,

      The only advice I can give from here is to try and delete the current installs of Mono and DM5 and try again. Make sure Mono framework is fully installed before installing the DM5 software. From other reactions I’ve learned that it doesn’t work on any Macbook, I have no idea why that is. It should work if you follow the steps described above.

  4. Hi, i have a problem with the installation.
    when i start the stunt dm5 software a window opens and says that :

    Suunto DM5 is configuring Mono Framework. This may take a few minutes.

    This window doest ends. And the software doesn’t start.

    Any ideas? I use a mac with the OS X el capitan

    • Hi Wojdi, Chas above has/ had the same problem. I have no idea why this is happening. Only solution I have is to remove all applications from your computer and try installing it again. I think Suunto should create an Apple software version for DM5.

  5. Terrible. Terrible. Terrible. I’ve been fighting with this for hours now. Terrible. Nothing works or helps. Do not use say you have a MAC interface if in fact you do not. The Zoop watch work just fine but I’m extremely angry that the even implied that you could connect to a computer. No chance. Do not use. Give up.

  6. Similar to Richard Fowler above, I have installed everything, and DM5 is running, but doesn’t want to recognize either of my Suunto Zoop computers. I’m curious whether Richard Fowler was ever successful by getting a new cable.

  7. I am having the same issue…. been working w Suunto and every suggestion they have given me doesn’t work either!

  8. March 2nd, 2017. Downloaded and installed the latest versions of everything on my vacation. Connect the Zoop in “PC SET” mode with the VERY expensive cable I bought made by Suunto. Nothing works. Won’t connect. Suunto: I can provide my PayPal information if you would like to refund me.

      I’m no official Suunto store, just a normal scuba diver like yourself. Just one who share some scuba stories through this blog. I would recommend reaching out to Suunto themselves through their website of customer service.
